A Plain Language Handbook for Legal Writers
provides a practical, workshop-in-a-book approach to the techniques of clear
writing for legal professionals, academics, students of the law and the
judiciary.
The first five chapters of the Handbook establish a context
for plain language, defining the term "plain language," establishing a
theoretical framework for readers to develop plain language documents,
providing techniques for making inclusive language a part of the plain language
approach and documenting various methods of evaluating and field testing
in-house documents. |

The second section of the Handbook applies plain
language techniques to key sample documents - legislation, wills, contracts,
by-laws, collective agreements and "public" forms, with before and after
samples to illustrate a range of models.
Also included is a Toolbox, a
comprehensive set of practice exercises designed to help the legal writer
self-diagnose the strengths and weaknesses in writing, with assistance to
overcome the problems. The book includes a section on the future of plain
language and an extensive bibliography of other resources to consult.
The author is a designer and developer of curriculum for writing
programs, writer, speaker and facilitator of plain language writing workshops
for lawyers and other professionals. She is a frequent speaker at Canadian Bar
Association meetings, and has presented at the Canadian Council of Teachers of
English and at the National Council of Teachers of English Conference. |
