The Musée national des beaux-arts du
Québec has the most comprehensive collection of Québec art,
dating from the very beginning to present day. A selection of 202 major works
drawn from this prestigious collection gives the reader an overview of the
evolution of Québec art spanning from the large painting The Guardian
Angel by Frère Luc, a work dating from 1671, to the very recent photo
installation Vicinity by Alain Paiement.
The selection also contains
some 15 "non- Québec" masterpieces from the permanent collection of the
Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Painting, sculpture,
drawing, engravings, photography, decorative arts, design and installation all
have their place, making this reference book as enjoyable as it is instructive.

The 202 accompanying texts in the publication were
commissioned to art historian Pierre Landry. Portraying each of the art works
as part of a historic continuity, Landry has also ensured the overall stylistic
cohesion of the book.
The preface is written by John Porter, Director of
the museum, who provides an overview of the history of the museums
collections since its first acquisitions in 1920. |
