Strangers at Our Gates: Canadian Immigration and Immigration Policy, 1540-2006, Revised Edition |
| Immigrants and immigration
have always been central to Canadians perception of themselves as a
country and as a society. For years, Canadians stood proudly behind our
open-door immigration policy. In this crisply written history, Valerie Knowles
describes the different kinds of immigrants who have settled in Canada, and the
immigration policies that have helped to define the character of Canadian
immigrants over the centuries. Key policymakers and moulders of public opinion
figure prominently in the colourful story, as does the role played by
racism. |

| This revised third edition of Strangers at Our Gates
contains additional material on immigration to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia,
sections on the evacuee children of the Second World War and Canadian War
Brides, and material relating to significant developments in the immigration
and refugee field since 1996. Special attention is paid to the Immigration and
Refugee Protection Act of 2001. About the author: Valerie Knowles is an Ottawa journalist and writer with degrees from Smith College (B.A. Honours History), McGill University (M.A. History), and Carleton University (B.J.). In addition to authoring books, Ms. Knowles has written for magazines, newspapers, and federal government departments, taught history, and worked as an archivist. Strangers at Our Gates has become a standard reference tool and the textbook of choice on the always controversial question of which, and how many, people should be allowed into Canada. Knowles provides a fast moving, highly readable survey of four centuries of migration to this country that never gets bogged down in the hair splitting acrimony of anachronistic moralizing so beloved by most of those who write on the subject.
